Don’t Redo Your Kitchen Without Reading These Tips

Whether you’re looking to remodel your kitchen, installing something for a new home or you just want to change out your current look, there are a lot of factors that come into play while going through this process. Since countertops tend to be one of the first things homeowners decide, we are breaking down everything you need to know when it comes to choosing your kitchen counter, cabinets and flooring.

One of the first things to choose is the type of material you want. Since there are many different types of materials to choose from, you want to know what material will work for you. Here is a short breakdown of a few different types of counters that you can choose from:

Marble: timeless, heat resistant and elegant.

Granite: heat resistant, natural colors, textures & finishes, crack and chip resistant.

Quartz: made up of other stones, a wide variety of options, very damage & stain resistant and no maintenance. Specifically, us at Planet Stone Marble and Granite, we carry Cambria Quartz which is VERY durable, stain resistant, maintenance free, safer for food prepping.

Concrete: industrial look, can choose virtually any color, not as heat resistant, prone to stains and cracks.

Butcher Block: classic, low maintenance, easy to scratch but easy to repair, often used on islands, can take in bacteria and needs to be disinfected frequently.

Laminate: budget-friendly, stain resistant, low maintenance and can damage easily.

When it comes to choosing your material, keep in mind that you should choose materials and colors that compliment one another. RULE OF THUMB: Keep the main, dominant colors of your kitchen simple (floor and cabinets) whereas you can be a little bit more creative with your accent color (countertop).

Now that you know a little bit more about countertop materials, choosing a cabinet color to compliment that material is the next best step. Even though you might know what type, material and color of countertop you want, it’s very important to keep in mind your cabinet choice when choosing this portion.

If you want your kitchen to look crisp and clean, the classic option is to go for light and bright cabinets to match your countertops. White or cream-colored countertops paired with white cabinets are a sure-fire way to get the job done RIGHT!

A timeless option is to stick with white cabinets, but choose a countertop that alternates both light and dark colors. If you choose a dark countertop, try going with an oak or dark cabinet for a dramatic look and finish.

Choosing your flooring is something that is a little more universal and more of an easy choice than choosing a counter and cabinet combination. Wood and tile are both very common, and chances are that the flooring in your kitchen flows with the rest of the flooring in your home.

If you are starting from scratch or are doing a full remodel, medium to dark flooring pairs GREAT with white cabinets and countertops that have both light and dark colors. A darker countertop and cabinet combination calls for a lighter flooring option for a beautiful contrast. Be careful when choosing a flooring option that is out of the ordinary – you may want to switch up your kitchen theme, counter or cabinet in the future so try and keep your flooring decision a simple one.
